Contact Lenses for Safety
John Boyce Optometrist was the first optometrist on the Gold Coast to ever use Daily Disposable (D/D) Contact Lenses as a protective eye barrier in an industrial environment.
We fitted Daily Disposable Contact Lenses to 6 workers in a high risk area at a large iron foundry.
Employees in the trial group recorded zero eye injuries over a 12 month period whilst wearing the contact lenses in addition to normal safety specs. The control group (also 6) wore safety specs only and sustained a total of 8 eye injuries requiring treatment during that same period (the normal historical rate for eye.
Each employee was screened before and after work. At the end of the day, the contact lenses frequently showed metal fragments embedded in the lens.
The results of this trial have been published in Australia and show conclusive proof of the PROTECTIVE NATURE of CONTACT LENSES.
